R5&6 Road Safety Campaign
Our student leaders in Rang 5 & 6 recently wrote persuasive letters to all Dáil and Seanad representatives in the Galway West constituency, highlighting the dangers of the road outside our school and requesting the installation of street lights. Out of the six sets of 24 letters (a letter from each child in the class), they received two responses.
They received a written reply from Sean Kyne, who acknowledged their concerns and answered their questions.
Even more encouragingly, Noel Grealish TD visited the school in person. He promised to look into the possibility of installing street lights outside the school and also offered to help address other concerns, including road markings, parking and traffic control.
Since then, Mr. Grealish has returned with an engineer from the ESB to begin organising the street lights. We are hopeful that this will lead to positive changes on the road outside our school very soon.
The Active Travel Team have confirmed that Tooreeny NS is on the Safe Routes to School list and is waiting for funding from An Taisce. It is unclear when funding will be released or how many schools are on the list for Galway. Scoil Cholmáin joined the list when it launched in 2021.
