Léigh sa Bhaile
Members of the Coiste questioned if there was an AR version of Irish reading. We did some research and with funding from the Coiste we purchased class sets of the new Léigh sa Bhaile books from 1st to 6th class.
Léigh sa Bhaile is a series of Irish language books for primary school. They aim to develop reading fluency, comprehension skills and vocabulary development by encouraging daily, independent reading at home. Each book consists of 120 single-page units, with a variety of styles and genres.
The beauty of these books is that your reading is all contained within one book, they are quick and easy to read, nicely illustrated, and have key vocabulary boxes on each page. They also have a very handy QR code on the back of the book so you can listen to the correct pronunciations together using your phone or tablet before reading the page.
If children never hear themselves speaking and reading Irish out loud, they will never have the confidence to speak it. You will see a huge difference in fluency, ability and confidence if the stories are read out loud every night. Pronunciation does not need to be perfect… Just give it a go!
Is Fearr Gaeilge Bhriste Ná Béarla Cliste = 'Broken Irish is Better Than Clever English. ' An old Irish proverb often used to encourage people to use their cúpla focail, regardless of their level of fluency!
