Mini-Scientist Competition Final
Kayla and Isabelle from R6 represented Scoil Cholmáin in the Intel Mini-Scientist competition at TUDublin on Friday, 13th February. The judges were very impressed by their ability to discuss their project in depth, explaining their scientific inquiries, hypotheses, experimental methods, predictions and results. Their working model was particularly praised, as was their clear understanding and explanation of all the learnings from their investigations.
Their project, titled - How Too Much Sugar and Salt Affects the Body - explored a range of investigations, including:
- Identifying hidden sugars in foods
- Reading food labels correctly
- Effects of sugar on teeth
- Effects of sugar on heart rate
- How the kidneys work (demonstrated with a working model)
- Effects of excessive sugar or salt on kidney function
- Effects of too much sugar or salt on the skin
Although they narrowly missed out on a prize, Kayla and Isabelle were commended for their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication. They progressed to the second round of judging and were visited by six different judges in total.
We are very proud of them both! They did an excellent job representing our school.
